The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Head Constable Ministerial (HCM) typing test is widely considered one of the most challenging skill tests across all government exams in India. While the required speeds seem standardโ35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindiโthe evaluation rules are exceptionally strict.
The biggest hurdle? The Backspace key is permanently disabled. Here is everything you need to know to survive and clear the CRPF HCM typing test.
1. The "No Backspace" Rule
In most exams like UP Police or SSC, if you make a mistake, you can simply press backspace and correct it before hitting the spacebar. In the CRPF HCM typing test, the backspace key is completely locked.
- Once you press a key, it is recorded.
- If you realize you made a spelling error mid-word, you cannot go back. You must finish the word and move to the next.
- This induces massive panic among candidates, causing them to make consecutive mistakes on the following words.
2. The 5% Mistake Exemption
CRPF understands that typing without a backspace is difficult, so they offer a 5% mistake exemption. This means that out of the total words you type, 5% of errors will be forgiven without any penalty.
For example, if you type 350 words in 10 minutes, 5% of 350 is 17.5. This means your first 17 mistakes will not deduct your speed.
3. The 1:10 Penalty Rule
If you commit more mistakes than the 5% permitted allowance, the penalty is severe. For every 1 extra mistake, 10 words are deducted from your total typed words.
Let's look at the math:
- You type 400 words in 10 minutes.
- 5% exemption = 20 mistakes allowed.
- You make 25 mistakes. (5 extra mistakes).
- Penalty = 5 mistakes x 10 words = 50 words deducted.
- Net Typed Words = 400 - 50 = 350 words.
- Final Speed = 350 / 10 = 35 WPM (Barely passing).
4. Font and Layout for Hindi Typists
For candidates opting for Hindi typing, the official layout is Mangal Remington Gail. Unlike Mangal Inscript, Remington Gail closely resembles the legacy Kruti Dev layout but operates on Unicode. You must ensure you are practicing on software that supports exactly this layout.
How to Prepare?
You cannot crack this exam by practicing on Notepad or MS Word. You need an environment that physically prevents you from using the backspace key so you can build mental resilience.
On CareerBook, we have a dedicated "Lock Backspace" toggle in our test configuration modal. Always practice with this enabled if you are targeting Defense exams.
